Salteña is a type of baked empanada originated from Potosi, Bolivia. Salteñas are hand held pastries (football shaped pies) filled with beef or chicken. It is mixed with either a slightly spicy or mild sweet sauce alongside an olive, raisins, eggs and potatoes.
It’s a tradition to enjoy Salteñas as mid-morning snacks; vendors in Bolivia often start selling them in the early morning and hopefully sell up to noon. How can you resist the savory flavours?
pop up! gta in december 14th
The Freakin' Llama will venture off once a month to the 416 unless otherwise noted. Pop-Ups are put in place to bring Salteñas to our customers' in Toronto/GTA.
We are a family-owned business. My husband Jose and I decided to crack the salteña code and I'm proud to say we have succeeded in this attempt. Our ethnicity is rooted in Bolivia, just like the salteña. I was born in the capital, La Paz, and came to Canada at age 6. My husband was born in Toronto, to Bolivian parents who came from Santa Cruz Bolivia. Ever since we started dating, my husband wanted to learn to make salteñas, as this delicious mid-morning snack is to die for. Every year he would bring up the salteña topic but I didn't show much interest. In 2020 during the lockdown, I decided to explore salteña recipes and found that recipes from Potosi, Bolivia were the best! My parents being from Potosi, always told me that the salteña originated from Potosi and how delicious they were. So I combined salteña recipes from La Paz and Potosi and boom, the Freakin Llama was born!
